About us

A community pre-school in the heart of Wigmore

We are a registered charity run by a committee of parents, staff and supporters, based at Newlands Church on Crawley Green Road.

Our aims

Our pre-school aims to provide a happy, caring and safe environment in which each child gains confidence and learns to relate to other children and adults around them.

We have a well-qualified team of staff who provide high-quality care and education for children below statutory school age. We are part of Luton Early Years, registered with Ofsted and members of the Early Years Alliance. The pre-school provides quality, affordable childcare to our local community, close to a major bus route and with its own car park.

How we work

  • Child-centred. Lots of high-quality time between adults and children, with activities built around what your child enjoys.
  • A key person for every child. They get to know your family and keep in touch through key person booklets and Tapestry.
  • EYFS. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage, so your child is learning through play in all seven areas.
  • Progress check at two. You get a written progress check between 24 and 36 months, shared with your health visitor if you agree.
  • Inclusion. We value diversity, promote equality and have a dedicated SENCo.
  • A good staff ratio. A high proportion of qualified staff, so children get plenty of adult time.

Join our committee

Our volunteer committee meets once each half term. New members are always welcome and no experience is needed. An enhanced DBS check is required.

SEND & inclusion

Ofsted described our support for children with special educational needs as a strength. Read about our SEND support.

Registered charity

Wigmore Under Fives is charity number 1000430. Any surplus goes back into the pre-school, from new resources to staff training.

Learning through play

The Early Years Foundation Stage

The EYFS has three prime areas, which are the building blocks for everything else, and four specific areas. Here is how they look in our room.

Communication and language

Talking, listening, stories, songs and rhymes every day.

Physical development

Climbing, balancing and running outside, plus threading, cutting and mark-making.

Personal, social and emotional

Making friends, taking turns, sharing and understanding feelings.

Literacy

A love of books, recognising names and first marks that become writing.

Mathematics

Counting, shapes, patterns and measuring through play, cooking and the sand tray.

Understanding the world

Planting, the seasons, festivals and the people and places around us.

Expressive arts and design

Painting, junk modelling, music, dancing and role play.

Your child's key person

From the first visit, your child has a key person. They help your child settle, notice what they love and plan activities that build on it. They are also your first point of contact for anything, big or small.

If your key person is away, the rest of the team know your child well too, so there is always a familiar face.

Tapestry learning journal

We record your child’s learning on Tapestry, a secure online journal. You can see photos and notes from their day on your phone, and add your own from home: a new word, a first bike ride, a trip to the park.

Sharing what happens at home helps us plan the next steps together.

Starting with us

Settling in, gently

Settling-in sessions

You stay for several sessions before leaving your child, so they meet the room and the staff gradually.

What to bring

Your child gets a Wigmore string bag for spare clothes, nappies and wipes. Please also send a packed lunch and a labelled snack pot. Full list.

Healthy and safe

Only adults on your collection form can collect, with a password for emergencies. Safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do.
