Apply online through Luton Council. Dates are from Luton Council’s 2027 admissions guide; always check the council website for the latest information.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Visit or look at the websites of the schools you like, and check their admissions rules.
  2. Register on Luton Council’s online admissions system.
  3. List your schools in order of preference. Using all your preferences gives you the best chance.
  4. Submit your application before 15 January 2027, even for academies, faith schools and free schools.
  5. Watch for your offer on 16 April 2027 and accept your place.

Starting school FAQs

When does my child start school in Luton?

Children born between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023 start reception in September 2027. Children usually start school in the September after their fourth birthday.

What is the deadline to apply for a reception place for September 2027?

The closing date in Luton is 15 January 2027. Applications that arrive after that are treated as late and are processed in June 2027.

When will I find out which school my child has been offered?

Luton sends offers for September 2027 starters on 16 April 2027.

Do I still need to apply if I want an academy or faith school?

Yes. Luton Council says you must still apply through the council, even if you have also contacted the school, and even if it is a faith school, academy or free school.

How does pre-school help my child get ready for school?

Children practise the everyday skills reception teachers love to see: listening in a group, taking turns, putting on their coat, opening their lunch box, going to the toilet and asking for help. We also share your child’s progress with their new school.
