Pre-school for 2 year olds

A gentle first step for your 2 year old

Children can join us from their second birthday. Small groups, a key person and lots of play help them settle and grow in confidence.

Settling in at your pace

You stay for the first few sessions, and we take things slowly until your child is happy.

No need to be potty trained

We change nappies throughout the day. Pop nappies and wipes in your child’s Wigmore string bag and we will look after the rest.

2-year progress check

Between 24 and 36 months we write a progress check with you, so any extra support starts early.

Their own things

Everything in its place

A Wigmore string bag

Every child gets their own Wigmore string bag. Fill it up with spare clothes, nappies and wipes, and it comes back and forth each day.

Their own tray

A tray with their name on, for their things and everything they make.

Their own coat peg

A named peg for their coat and bag, so they know exactly where their things live.

Chilled lunch trolley

Packed lunches go straight into our chilled lunch trolley and stay cool until lunchtime.

Talking and listening

Two is a big year for language. We fill the day with stories, songs, rhymes and chatter, use picture cards to help children say what they need, and lend books to take home. Ofsted noted how well our staff build children’s language and love of books.

Potty training, together

When you are ready to start at home, tell your key person. We will use the same words and routine here, keep spare clothes handy and celebrate every success with your child.

A day for our youngest children

  • Lots of outdoor play: running, climbing, the sandpit and planting
  • Messy play with paint, dough, water and sand
  • Short, fun group times with songs and stories
  • Plenty of cuddles and quiet time with their key person
  • Snack and lunch together, helping them learn to feed themselves

Funding for 2 year olds

Working parents can get up to 30 hours, and some families get 15 hours for extra support. Check your eligibility.

Questions

2 year olds FAQs

Can my 2 year old start pre-school?

Yes. Children can join us from their second birthday.

Is my 2 year old entitled to free hours?

Working parents can get up to 30 hours a week, and some families get 15 hours through 2-year-old funding for extra support. Paid places are also available.

Does my child need to be potty trained?

No. We change nappies throughout the day. Please send nappies and wipes in your child’s Wigmore string bag. When you start potty training at home, we will do the same here.

What staff ratio do you have for 2 year olds?

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage ratios for 2 year olds, which allow fewer children per adult than for older children, so younger children get more adult time.

My child isn’t talking much yet. Is that OK?

Lots of 2 year olds are still finding their words. Stories, songs and chatting through play help, and if we think extra help would be useful we will talk to you and, with your agreement, involve speech and language support.
